A good general site that has background is FirstWorldWar.com.  have a look at the section on 'How it began' from the menu down the left of the front page.  Also check out some of the Feature articles which are found by clicking on the Special Features tab on the left hand side. e.g. The causes of World War One.

Another good site is the BBC history site.  The BBC website is usually a great place to look for history info. It has a useful timeline as well.
