Where can I find information about the elections and New Zealand’s political system?
The best place to start looking for information about the New Zealand elections and electoral system is the Elections New Zealand website. There you can find out about how to enrol, how to vote, and more.
New Zealand’s national parliament is elected using MMP (Mixed Member Proportional representation). The Elections site has a lot of information about MMP and how it works.
HOT TIP: You can use the "General topics" column on the right hand side of the Elections site to find more information. Try clicking on the heading "elections", where you will find a good overview of the New Zealand electoral system. The education centre also has lots of interesting topics.
Te Ara, the Encyclopedia of New Zealand, is a great site for New Zealand information. Try typing "elections" into the search box. The New Zealand electoral system is covered in an article called Nation and Government.
Try the
New Zealand Parliament website for information on how
parliament works. To find links to all the websites of the eight
political parties involved in the
2011 election, go to "MPs", "Parties and Electorates", and then "Parliamentary Parties".
We like New Zealand History Online's section on
Politics and Government. Information on
elections from the past leading up to the present can be found under "Political Milestones".
