For example, you could look at changes in transport, types of work people do, communication and technology, types of food people eat, families, education, resources needed to keep a village/town/city running.... 

Also, you can look at Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia. You need to cross check this information with other sites though, as anyone can add to Wikipedia and the information is not always completely accurate. They have a good background article on the 20th century - with entries on each decade.
